I’ve been a therapist going on 10 years, specializing in OCD and anxiety. I had symptoms of OCD in college and experienced different subtypes. Finding proper treatment back then was difficult, but I discovered Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, and I was able to get my life back. That’s my goal for you. ERP is well-researched and proven to work. It puts you in a position where you face uncertainty, but you’ll learn how to not rely on compulsions and get on the right track.
OCD can make anyone feel ashamed of themselves because the thoughts you’re experiencing are coming from a very dark place. Self-disclosure of your OCD experiences is hard because you’re asking someone to trust that what you’re feeling is not what you intended to do. I know that your unwanted thoughts and urges are not who you are; that’s your OCD, and not a reflection of your character. There’s nothing you can say that I have either heard before or experienced myself. As your therapist, you can always reach out to me. You can choose not to allow OCD to take over your life. By making positive choices during our sessions, you can find yourself skilled enough to tackle anything thrown at you.
